Should You Sell Sports Memorabilia on eBay or Through an Auction House?
A practical decision framework — the value threshold, the documentation threshold, the time threshold, and the buyer-pool threshold.

Short answer
Under ~$1,000 with active comps, eBay typically nets more after all fees. Above ~$2,500 with authentication, a specialist auction house typically nets more even after seller premium. The middle range depends on time, shipping comfort, and authentication status.
The eBay vs. auction-house decision tends to come down to four thresholds.
Threshold 1: Value
- Under $500: eBay almost always nets more after fees.
- $500–$2,500: depends on authentication status and comp density.
- $2,500–$10,000: auction house usually wins, especially with authentication.
- $10,000+: specialist auction house with category strength almost always wins.
Threshold 2: Documentation
If your item is authenticated by PSA/DNA, JSA, or BAS, auction houses can market it confidently. If it's not authenticated, you either:
- Authenticate first (recommended for $300+ items), or
- List on eBay with honest disclosure, knowing buyers will discount the missing authentication.
Threshold 3: Time
eBay completes in 1–10 days. Auction houses run on 8–16 week consignment timelines. If you need cash this month, eBay or a specialist dealer is the route.
Threshold 4: Buyer pool
- eBay's buyer pool is enormous but unselected — you compete on price.
- Specialist auction houses have smaller buyer pools but vetted and well-funded — you compete on item quality.
For a Reggie Jackson signed jersey, an auction house buyer pool is the right one. For a 2019 modern signed baseball at the same player's show, eBay's pool is the right one.
A simple decision matrix
| Situation | Recommended route |
|---|---|
| $200 signed photo, authenticated | eBay |
| $800 game-used baseball, authenticated | eBay or specialist consignment |
| $2,500 signed jersey, no authentication | Authenticate first, then auction |
| $5,000+ photo-matched jersey, authenticated | Specialist auction house |
| Estate collection of 50 mixed items | Sort first — bulk to estate sale, standouts to auction |
