Definition
A Letter of Authenticity (LOA) is a multi-paragraph authentication document describing what was examined, what signature or feature was authenticated, the methodology used, and the authenticator's opinion. LOAs are often issued for higher-value items where a narrative is appropriate.
Why it matters
LOAs from recognized authenticators carry the most weight in the secondary market and are often required by major auction houses for high-value consignments.
Example
A signed presidential letter is submitted to JSA, who issues a full LOA describing the signature comparison, the paper analysis, and the conclusion of authenticity.
