What Makes Sports Memorabilia Valuable?
The variables that move sports memorabilia prices — and the order of importance for the most common item types.
Short answer
In sports memorabilia, there are roughly five variables that explain almost all price variance:
- Authentication. PSA/DNA, JSA, or Beckett (BAS) carries weight. Private COAs alone don't.
- Player significance. Hall-of-Famer signatures outperform peer-level signatures on similar surfaces by 3–10x.
- Game-used / game-worn vs. retail. With documentation, game-used items can be 5–50x retail. Without documentation, the spread collapses.
- Condition. Especially around signatures; smearing, fading, or transfer damage hits price hard.
- Provenance. Photo-matched jerseys, locker-room photos, signing-event records, and chain-of-custody letters multiply price.

What this means in practice
If you have an unauthenticated signed item from a major player, your highest-leverage action isn't finding the perfect comp — it's submitting for authentication. If you have an unauthenticated game-used piece, your highest-leverage action is finding the photograph that ties it to a documented game.
